How many times have you heard a phrase similar to, “Our strategy is to become the number one at … whatever.” Many organizations and individuals confuse strategy with goals, objectives and tactics. Very simply put strategy is about:

     Differentiation

Inherent in strategy is doing, producing, measuring or positioning something or the resources of an organization differently than its competitors. This may entail risk and some degree of change management, but then that is what “differentiates” real strategy from the rest of the poser pack.

In today’s rapidly changing environment it is more critical to provide added value to stakeholders by a strategy that provides for differentiation.

In the non profit sector where the status quo has served well for many years the time is ripe to inject some real strategy into organizations to lead them into more sustainable futures.

The next time you are part of a team to develop strategy, break from tradition, ask tough questions and get out of your comfort zone.

Remember it is all about differentiation!
